"The Value of Blowing up a Balloon"
by Kendall L. Boyle, Josh Olinick, and Cynthia Lewis
In the article, it explains that poor breathing patterns, posture and trunk stability have been linked to complaints of low back pain. Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical advice or miss work and is a leading cause of disability worldwide (www.mayoclinic.org). This study by Kyndall et al. presents a therapeutic exercise that promotes optimal posture and neuromuscular control of the deep abdominals, diaphragm, and pelvic floor muscles for patients with suboptimal respiration and posture that may have associated musculoskeletal complains such as LBP or SI joint pain. The exercise was developed by the Postural Restoration Institute™ and is called the 90/90 bridge with ball and balloon and is depicted in the picture below.
Here is a description of the exercise:
The exercise is fairly easy to perform once you get the hang of it, so whether you are a fellow practitioner or a patient who has low back pain, give it a try and let us know what you think!
